AKB48's big break

Two months after signing onto King Records, AKB48 released their 11th physical single, Oogoe Diamond (大声ダイヤモンド). The single was special in that it was the first to feature Matsui Jurina, the front girl of AKB48′s new Nagoya based spin-off, SKE48.  The 11 year old Jurina, even took the center position for the single, displacing AKB48′s own cover girl Maeda Atsuko for the first time in history, to the displeasure of many AKB fans.
Translated literally, Oogoe Diamond means “Diamond Shout”. The title is explained in the tag line for Oogoe Diamond’s advertisements, that “If you shout loudly, it will become a diamond”. The lyrics for the song revolve around confessing one’s love.

Tahahashi Eiki who last directed Sakura no Hanabiratachi 2008′s video, returned to film Oogoe Diamond. Like in the previous video, Oogoe Diamond’s PV tells a story with its drama-like scenes. An even larger cast of 69 members (including Research Students) appear in the video if only as extras. Though Maeda plays a key role in the story, she is absent from most of the video’s scenes. She returns at the last moment to join the rest of the girls at the forefront.

Apart from SKE48′s Matsui Jurina, Oogoe Diamond also marked AKB48′s Kitahara Rie, Miyazaki Miho and Sashihara Rino’s first time as Senbatsu members.

Regular cover

Theater cover
Oogoe Diamond was released as only two separate versions, both of which included a bonus DVD with the song’s promo video.

The “Regular Edition” came with extra Team A and Team B renditions of the single, while the “Theater Edition” (sold at AKB48′s theater) came with Team K, Research Students and SKE48 versions. The regular bonus DVD had Oogoe Diamond’s usual “making of” video, while the theater DVD included clips of AKB48 girls confessing their love to the camera, as well as a behind the scenes look of SKE48′s training.

First press of the theater version also came with a random girl’s photo (including non-performing members).

Matsui Jurina had the pleasure of being the sole person to grace both covers of the single.

Inside
To quell outrage, a teary Aachan printout was included inside for use as an alternate cover, or so you’d think. First press versions of the single came with a randomly inserted extra CD jacket, of one of the 19 other chosen members.

Oogoe Diamond was used as the ending theme song for Mendol. A late night drama staring AKB48′s own Takahashi Minami, Kojima Haruna and Minegishi Minami.

Thanks to its catchy pop tune and improved marketing budget, Oogoe Diamond became AKB48′s best performing single up to that point. It reached a weekly Oricon rank of #3 during the first week of release and has continued to chart on and off for almost 2 years. Oogoe Diamond also remains one of AKB48′s most popular songs, ranking as the #4 and #2 song fan voted song for for 2010 and 2009 respectively.
